Distinguished from kunqu and jingju by its lyrical, romance-focused dramaturgical orientation, accessible Wu-dialect Shaoxing-area linguistic register, and the all-female casting convention. The 1953 film adaptation of the canonical Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai butterfly-lovers legend (with Yuan Xuefen and Fan Ruijuan in the principal roles) consolidated the national audience.",
