  "lineage": "Psalmody and anthems sung by village choirs (quires) and played by small church bands from galleries at the west end of English parish churches and chapels, roughly 1700 to 1850, until Victorian church reform replaced them with surpliced chancel choirs and organs or harmoniums. Provincial psalmodists wrote plain and fuging settings in three or four parts, usually with the tune in the tenor, and bands of fiddles, flutes, clarinets, bassoons, serpents and bass viols doubled the voices. Thomas Hardy portrayed the Mellstock quire in Under the Greenwood Tree, and the repertoire has been revived by West Gallery Music Association quires. The cello card stands in for the church bass viol.",
