The sygyt technique produces a clear, piercing whistle-tone in the upper harmonic-series range (typically the eighth through twelfth partials above the fundamental) by tightly constricting the lips and tongue to filter a single overtone out of the harmonic spectrum of a sustained low-register fundamental. The result is a whistle-melody floating two-to-three octaves above the singer's chest-register fundamental drone. Sygyt is the most virtuosic and technically demanding of the Tuvan overtone techniques — masters can sustain a continuous fundamental while producing rapid melodic figures in the whistle-overtone, sometimes with secondary mid-register overtones flickering simultaneously. Performance contexts span solo pastoral, contest contexts at the annual Khoomei-in-the-Center-of-Asia festival in Kyzyl, and international touring. Igil (two-string upright fiddle) or doshpuluur (long-necked plucked lute) sometimes accompany. Anatoli Kuular is among the canonical twentieth-century sygyt masters. Ted Levin's Where Rivers and Mountains Sing (Indiana UP 2006) and Smithsonian Folkways SFW40017 are the principal documentary anchors.
