Whall and later Stan Hugill, whose Shanties from the Seven Seas remains the codifying text; a shantyman improvised solo lines against a fixed crew refrain, with the pull or push of the work fixing the metre - short-drag shanties with two hauls per verse, halyard shanties with a longer chorus, capstan shanties in continuous rolling 6/8 or 4/4 for windlass work - sung unaccompanied at moderate tempo in open chest voice.",
