  "lineage": "Skolt Sámi leuʹdd vocal tradition of the Skolt Sámi (Nuõrttsää'mǩiõll-speaking) population of the easternmost Sámi homeland — historically the Pechenga (Petsamo) region of the Russian Kola Peninsula, displaced post-1944 to the Sevettijärvi-Nellim region of northeastern Finland. Leuʹdd differs from the Northern Sámi luohti in functional orientation: rather than the open-ended personal-or-natural-feature evocation of luohti, leuʹdd are narrative-personal-history songs telling the life-stories of specific individuals (the singer's own life, or the life of a deceased relative). The leuʹdd repertoire thus constitutes an oral-historical archive of the Skolt Sámi community, particularly significant given the community's displacement-trauma history. Vocal style features narrow-range melody (often even narrower than Northern Sámi luohti, sometimes restricted to three pitches), with characteristic micro-pitch-inflection on syllables, narrative-strophic structure (longer narratives extending across many strophes with melodic-formula return), and a more text-bearing register than luohti's pure-sound-evocation. The Skolt Sámi were converted to Russian Orthodoxy (not Lutheran like the Northern Sámi), so leuʹdd survived alongside Orthodox liturgical chant rather than under the suppression-pressure of the Lutheran Sámi-mission. The Marko Jouste-led Saami Culture Archive at the University of Oulu maintains the primary documentation; the Sevettijärvi leuʹdd ensemble continues active transmission.
