Luohti is the principal yoik subgenre of the Northern Sámi (Davvisámegiella-speaking) population — a sung-vocal form whose conceptual orientation is fundamentally different from Western lyric song: a yoik does not sing \"about\" its subject but rather is the subject — to yoik a person, a place, or an animal is to evoke and bring-present that subject through the act of yoiking. Vocal style features narrow-range melody (two-to-five pitches typically), characteristic nasal-resonant timbre, characteristic descending-melodic-contour shapes, repeated melodic-formula cycling, and a strikingly non-strophic open-ended performance temporality (a yoik does not have a definite beginning or ending — the singer enters and exits a yoik mid-phrase). Pre-tempered tonal system with characteristic fourth, fifth, and octave intervals as the structural skeleton. Repertoire is personal: each Sámi person traditionally has an assigned-or-received luohti that names them, and natural-feature luohti exist for specific mountains, lakes, and reindeer-herd boundaries. The Sámi Christian-mission suppression-era 1850s-1950s pushed the tradition underground; the post-1970s Sámi cultural revival (anchored in the founding of the Sámi Parliament and the Sami University College) has restored public-performance space, with figures such as Nils-Aslak Valkeapää, Mari Boine, and Wimme Saari among the canonical twentieth-century revival figures. Arnt Bakke's 1949-1972 field-recording collection at UiT The Norwegian Arctic University Museum (Tromsø) and Ola Graff's continued 1982-2019 collection constitute the principal documentary anchor.
