  "lineage": "The noaidi was the shaman of the Sami peoples of northern Fennoscandia, who entered trance to travel to the spirit worlds — for healing, hunting-luck, and mediation with the dead — often falling into ecstatic stillness while helpers sang. The rite combined the runebomme (frame drum, whose membrane bore a painted cosmological map read with a vuorbi pointer) with joik, the characteristically non-lexical, circular Sami vocal genre. Christian missionary campaigns from the seventeenth century onward suppressed the drums and demonized joik, and much is reconstructed from missionary accounts, confiscated drums, and later joik documentation. The associated joik tradition survives strongly and is documented in extensive twentieth-century field recordings.",
