Olonkhosut epic-reciters perform multi-day continuous recitations of heroic-epic cycles — Nyurgun Bootur the Swift, the canonical olonkho narrative codified in the twentieth-century thirty-six-thousand-verse recension by Platon Oiunsky (1893-1939, founding Sakha writer), provides the type-specimen. Performance alternates between sung-melodic passages for character-voices (each major character has an assigned melodic-mode signature) and rhythmic-recitation narrative passages for the omniscient narrator. Sung passages employ the kylyhakh ornamental vibrato — a characteristic Sakha throat-ornament with a tight, fluttering quality — and the Sakha pentatonic modal vocabulary. The olonkho cycles preserve pre-Christian Sakha cosmology (the three-world division: upper-world abaahy spirits, middle-world humans, lower-world demons), with the Tengrist sky-religion still legible in the cosmographic framing. Performance traditionally in winter, in the balagan log-and-earth dwelling, lasting multiple nights. V.L. Seroshevsky's 1896 ethnography Yakuts is the foundational Russian scholarly documentation; the Soviet-era Sakha Republic cultural-revival institutions provide ongoing transmission infrastructure.
