The Last Poets formed in Harlem in 1968 and their self-titled 1970 debut set traded, chanted verses over hand percussion, while Gil Scott-Heron's 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' first appeared on Small Talk at 125th and Lenox (Flying Dutchman, 1970) with only congas behind the voice; the Watts Prophets carried the parallel West Coast strand. The delivery is rhythmically locked to the drum pulse but spoken rather than sung, with group members answering the lead line in call-and-response, and the records circulated through Black radio and community networks into the record crates of the first Bronx DJs.",
