The genre became a major popular-theatrical form in northern China through the early-twentieth-century commercial-theatre period. The post-1949 Beijing Pingju Theatre and Hebei Provincial Pingju Theatre consolidated the modern repertoire. Canonical play Yang Sanjie Gao Zhuang (The Story of Yang Sanjie) constitutes the type-specimen.",
