The aesthetic — affectless voice buried in shortwave carrier hiss, heterodyne whistles, and fading — was canonized by The Conet Project (Irdial-Discs, 1997), a four-CD anthology of off-air recordings that made the genre a touchstone for experimental musicians. Operating agencies almost never acknowledge the stations, and their purpose is known largely through espionage trials and defector accounts.",
