  "lineage": "Sacred music written for the churches and lay brotherhoods of the eighteenth-century gold-mining towns of Minas Gerais, among them Vila Rica (Ouro Preto), Arraial do Tejuco (Diamantina) and São João del-Rei, largely by mulatto professional musicians such as José Joaquim Emerico Lobo de Mesquita, organist at Arraial do Tejuco in the 1780s, and Marcos Coelho Neto, in a style close to the early Classical, for choir with strings, horns and basso continuo. The musicologist Francisco Curt Lange rediscovered the manuscripts in the mid-twentieth century, and the orchestras Lira Sanjoanense and Ribeiro Bastos of São João del-Rei, which trace their origins to the eighteenth century, still perform this repertoire in the liturgy.",
