  "name": "Medieval Latin chant and Notre Dame organum",
  "family": "classical",
  "lineage": "Medieval Western European liturgical music tradition spanning monophonic Gregorian chant (canonized late ninth century, eight church modes, Latin liturgical text) and the early-polyphonic organum that emerged from it. Ninth-century parallel organum (the chant doubled at the fifth or fourth, with optional octave doubling); twelfth-century melismatic organum (the chant slowed to drone-tone in the lower voice while the upper voice elaborates ornamentally over each chant pitch). The Notre Dame school, Paris, c.1160-1250, codified the rhythmic-modes system and expanded to three-and-four-voice organum: Léonin (c.1135-1201), credited with the Magnus Liber Organi (the great book of organum), set the two-voice canonical repertoire; Pérotin (fl. c.1200), expanded to three and four voices and composed canonical large-scale organum-quadruplum settings of Viderunt omnes (1198) and Sederunt principes. Cantus firmus practice: the chant melody remains in one voice (typically the tenor) while the other voices counterpoint above. Anonymous IV (English theorist, c.1270s, his treatise survives in a thirteenth-century Bury St Edmunds manuscript) preserves the attribution of these works to Léonin and Pérotin. Distinguished from Renaissance sacred polyphony by limited-voice-count and modal-not-tonal harmonic vocabulary; distinguished from Byzantine chant by Latin-language and Roman-rite cantus-firmus framing; distinguished from Old Roman chant by Frankish-redacted melodic-formulae lineage",
