Performance centers on the eunoto warrior-graduation ceremony and adumu jumping-dance: young moran (warriors) in a competitive circle, each leaping vertically to maximum height while the surrounding warriors sing a polyrhythmic guttural-vocal pattern of pitched grunt-and-throat-call accompanied by hyper-rapid breath-and-tongue-clicking and the rhythmic call-and-response of the olaranyani song-leader. No melodic instrument tradition — vocal-only, with the song-leader's melodic line answered by the warrior chorus in unison-or-octave-leap configuration with characteristic vocal-rasp and chest-voice projection. Naomi Kipury's 1983 ethnographic collection (Oral Literature of the Maasai, East African Educational Publishers, Nairobi) and the 2001-2003 Smithsonian Maasai Field Recordings (Daniel Johnson / Simon Saitoti) provide the principal documentation. Repertoire functions span warrior-formation cycles, cattle-praise, ilkipoot-elder oratorical-rhetorical cycles, women's parallel choral repertoire (lipsmacking eunoto-women's songs), and warrior-mourning. Distinguished from neighboring Sukuma and Kikuyu vocal traditions by Maasai's exclusive vocal-only (no instrument) configuration and characteristic guttural-rasp male-warrior projection; distinguished from Samburu (a closely-related Nilotic group) by Maasai's adumu-jumping-as-primary-performance-architecture.",
