Its earliest musical sources are the monophonic Laudario di Cortona of the late thirteenth century and the more florid fourteenth-century Laudario Magliabechiano of Florence, mostly in ballata form with a refrain (ripresa) returning between stanzas; polyphonic laude followed in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.",
