The dengbêj sings unaccompanied narrative-epic, lament (heyranok), and historical-political commentary songs in Kurdish (Kurmanji, Sorani, or Zaza), in free-rhythm extended-melisma style with wide melodic range. The post-1923 Turkish-Republican suppression nearly extinguished public-performance space; post-1991 partial liberalization and dedicated dengbêj coffee-houses in Diyarbakır restored continuity. Canonical repertoire centers on Mem û Zîn (Ehmedê Xanî, seventeenth century).",
