Performance: solo or duo unaccompanied voice in strict Kalevala-meter (four-stress eight-syllable trochaic line), often performed antiphonally with one singer providing a low-register drone or echo to the other's melodic line. The Karelian-Finnish runo-singer historical tradition was nearly extinguished by twentieth-century Soviet-and-Finnish modernization; documentary collection by Lönnrot and subsequent collectors preserved approximately 200,000 verses. Distinguished from broader Finnic vocal-music by rune-singing's strict Kalevala-meter and oral-epic-narrative orientation.",
