Gilbert Rouget's 1957 Smithsonian Folkways FE 4487 recordings (Bushmen Music and Pygmy Music), Lorna Marshall's 1950s-1980s Harvard Peabody documentation (published as Nyae Nyae !Kung Beliefs and Rites, 1999), and Emmanuelle Olivier's 1993-1995 doctoral fieldwork at the British Library Sound Archive constitute the documentary canon. The tradition predates by millennia the more recent Kalahari population entries, with linguistic and genetic evidence supporting deep continuity.
