  "lineage": "The derashah of the itinerant Ashkenazi preacher (maggid) of Eastern Europe, a homiletic sermon weaving Torah, Talmud, and midrash with moral exhortation, typically delivered in Yiddish with a distinctive study-chant cadence derived from the lernen (Gemara) shteyger. The form flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries; the Dubner Maggid (Jacob Kranz, d. 1804) was celebrated for his mashal parables, and the Maggid of Mezeritch was central to the spread of early Hasidism. The delivery moves fluidly between conversational speech and a rising, questioning recitative melody used to voice textual argument. It survives today in yeshiva drashot and Hasidic gatherings.",
