The hudhud is a sung narrative-recital cycle performed by an elder female cantor (mumbaki) with chorus response, during agricultural work in the rice terraces (rice-transplanting and rice-harvesting), at wakes for the dead, and during the bogwa exhumation-and-reburial ceremony. Individual hudhud recitations can extend to days, and the canonical hudhud cycles narrate the deeds of culture-heroes Aliguyon, Bugan, and other Ifugao mytho-historical figures across hundreds of episodes. Performance involves the cantor's solo recitative-melodic line answered by the choral group in unison-or-octave response, with characteristic terminal pitch-drop closing each verse and a narrow-range melodic vocabulary built around three-to-five pitches. The Ifugao language is a Northern Philippine Cordilleran language; the hudhud repertoire preserves archaic Ifugao narrative-poetic conventions. Father Francis Lambrecht (Belgian CICM missionary, 1950s-1960s Kiangan-region fieldwork) produced the foundational documentation; the Kiangan municipality cantor lineage continues active transmission.
