Attested from the Archaic period through the Classical, most vividly in Plato's dialogue Ion, which portrays the rhapsode Ion of Ephesus competing at the Panathenaic festival in Athens where the Homeric text was recited in fixed relay. The delivery was a heightened, cantillated speech built on oral-formulaic diction, the compositional system reconstructed by Milman Parry and Albert Lord from South Slavic guslar analogues.",
