Vocal architecture features close-harmony chordal-block writing (almost always homophonic, with all voices moving together rhythmically), characteristic Mediterranean modal-tonal ambiguity (major-mode tonic with frequent flattened-seventh and minor-mode plagal cadences), and the canonical klapa \"Dalmatian\" intonation with slightly stretched intervals producing a bright, resonant ensemble sound when sung in stone-walled outdoor narrow-street alleys (the canonical performance acoustic). Repertoire spans the dramatic Mediterranean-coastal love-and-loss ballad cycles, the religious-procession-and-feast-day repertoire, sea-and-fishing lament cycles, and the contemporary klapa-festival-composed repertoire of newer pieces in the traditional style. Klapa Cambi, Klapa Šufit, and Klapa Sebenico among the canonical twentieth-century ensembles. The annual Omiš Festival of Dalmatian Klapa (founded 1967) constitutes the principal performance-and-competition venue.
