Performance involves the lead voice (kantadur) and the answering voice (kontradur), with the two singers standing close together and projecting outward in unison facing the audience or open landscape. Parallel instrumental form exists in the sopele (paired large-and-small conical-bore double-reed shawms playing the same intervallic vocabulary as the two voices) and the šurla (similar paired shawms in the southern Istrian dialect). Performance contexts include outdoor village squares, processions, and the contemporary folk-festival circuit.
