Documented from the earliest race-record sermons of Rev. J. M. Gates and Rev. J. C. Burnett in the 1920s through the mid-century recorded sermons of Rev. C. L. Franklin on Chess and Jewel. The chanted-preaching form and its formulaic building-blocks were analyzed by Bruce Rosenberg in The Art of the American Folk Preacher (1970). The preacher improvises within stock cadential formulas, accelerating and rising in pitch until the congregation's shouts and the organ carry the room.",
