The verse is unrhymed alliterative long-line (two half-lines bridged by alliteration and four stresses), preserved in Beowulf, Widsith, Deor and The Battle of Maldon; Widsith and the Beowulf scenes at Heorot are the tradition's self-portrait of the singer 'unwinding' word-hoards to the harp. The compositional idiom is oral-formulaic, and although a hearpe may have accompanied, the surviving character is that of chanted, stress-timed declamation.",
