"lineage": "Ainu yukar heroic-epic recitation tradition of Hokkaido (northern Japan) and historically of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. Yukar are sung-narrated mytho-heroic cycles featuring the culture-hero Aynurakkur (the Ainu-version of the central-protagonist figure) and adjacent cosmological narratives. Performance involves the chanter (yukar-uta-kur) sitting with a rhythm-stick (rep-ni) struck against the edge of the cise (traditional dwelling) hearth-box, marking a continuous rhythmic pulse beneath the recitation. The narrative voice alternates between named characters; the chanter does not move position but conveys character distinction through subtle vocal-register and melodic-cadence shifts. The yukar parent-form spans related narrative genres: kamuy yukar (god-yukar, cosmological-creation cycles), mat-yukar (women-yukar, female-protagonist cycles), tuita (folk-tales), and uwepeker (didactic-tales). The Bronisław Piłsudski cylinder recordings (1902-1905, preserved at the Phonogrammarchiv in Vienna and reissued by Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań) are the earliest sound documentation of the tradition; the linguistic-and-cultural scholarship of Kyōsuke Kindaichi and his Ainu informant-collaborators (1910s-1950s) and the subsequent work of Mashiho Chiri (1909-1961, the first major Ainu-descended Ainu-language scholar) constitute the canonical documentary corpus. The closely-related rekuhkara throat-game tradition went extinct in the early twentieth century. Distinguished from Japanese gidayū-bushi by Ainu-language-specific narrative-cadence and rep-ni rhythm-stick (vs shamisen accompaniment) configuration; distinguished from Sakha olonkho by Ainu yukar's sung-and-spoken alternation register and the rep-ni accompaniment.",
